Here we are again with  Susan Cooper from Finder Our Way Now.  This is our third post swap profile-susanand I have to tell you this has been quite fun. Susan has a way with wine and here is her holiday inspired review.  Take it away Susan.

Hi everyone, as you know, Patrick and I share a post every now and then. So here we are with another post swap.

Van Ruiten Pinot Grigio 2010

The holidays are upon us and in full swing.  I thought it would be fun to showcase a lighter wine Van Ruiten Pinot Grigio 2011that would go well with all our holiday fare.  That’s why I chose the Van Ruiten Pinot Grigio 2010.  I love local boutique wineries.  They have such charm and a passion for what they do that it’s hard not to appreciate their end result. That certainly is no exception with the Van Ruiten Pinot Grigio 2010.

The Van Ruiten Family Winery is located in Lodi, California.   Lodi wine region is located just south of Sacramento.  The Lodi area has been a major wine grape growing region since the 1850’s. Today, the area has 100,000 acres of wine grapes.  Lodi is best known for its full-bodied old vine Zinfandel wines.

The Lodi vineyards and wineries such as the one owned by the Van Ruiten Family benefits greatly from the cool afternoon delta breeze that flow in from the San Francisco Bay Area. What Lodi Wine Trail Mapisn’t well known is Lodi leads all the California wine districts in the production of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Viognier wine and wine grapes.

The Van Ruiten vineyards and winery was a dream fulfilled by a young Dutch immigrant by the name of John Ruiten.  Shortly after World War II, John settled in the Lodi area. In 1950, he bought land to plant his first vineyard of primarily zinfandel vines.  The business has remained in the family. In fact, the first fields that John planted with zinfandel vines still remain as part of the Van Ruiten estate.  The Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz blend is one of their most popular wines and for good reason.  The Van Ruiten Vineyards Old Vine Zinfandel and Chardonnay are also wines that are very much worth trying.  All of these and others can be tasted daily at their Lodi Wineries Tasting Room.

“Pinot Grigio has been said to possess red wine capabilities on the dinner table. This versatile varietal has also done an excellent job in enticing the ever increasing number of “Anything but Chardonnay” sentiments of wine drinkers. The 2011 Pinot Gris is brilliant in color and accentuated with powerful aromas of peach blossom, pear, apple and subtly enriched notes of apricot and melon. Our Pinot Gris is packed with tropical fruit and framed with a balanced, elegant mouthfeel that allows the intense fruit flavors to shine.”

It was a delightful find, a wine I very much enjoyed.  I especially liked the tropical fruit notes that where so distinctive in the overall drinking experience.

I highly recommend this light and refreshing wine.  It was a great compliment to our most recent holiday gathering and the various hors d’oeuvre we had on hand.

  1. In the next few days i will be starting the journey of the cider that I will be releasing around the holidays for next year. This one will be an apple cinnamon cysor (half mead, half cider). Too bad it won’t be ready till next year, it would be very fitting for the season.
